Engine Oil Pan Gasket` - sina27 - 09-21-2022 Hello I have a 1996 Geo Tracker, 2WD, 5 speed, 16 valve MFI I want to replace the oil pan gasket since it is leaking a bit. I ordered the Fel Pro gasket from rockauto. The FSM doesnt say anything about using a gasket. It says to use a bead of RTV. Should I use the gasket I ordered or not? If I should use the gasket, should I also add RTV on both sides of the gasket? ' RE: Engine Oil Pan Gasket` - JCTracker - 10-16-2022 If I understand correctly they came from the factory with RTV only (no gasket). That said (and at the risk of being lectured to the contrary) on my 4x4 the best case scenario if I ever had a leak would be having the option to undo motor mounts, lift the engine and fuss with dropping and reinstalling the pan from underneath the car. Worst case I'd have to pull the engine to do the job. Either way, whenever I have an engine out to rebuild it I've chosen to always use a FelPro gasket. Knock on wood I've never had a leak or had to test whether the engine has to come out or not to reseal the pan. If you decide to go with the gasket here are some additional tips I've used.................I apply the the RTV to the block and the pan, sandwiching the gasket between them, install all of the bolts but only tighten them finger tight. Then let it all sit overnight and tighten to spec which if I remember correctly is 8 lb ft (I just double checked on Fixkick's torque spec page and it's 7-8.5 lb ft and saw a note "No gasket allowed after 95". Not sure why but mine is a 90 so whatever the reason is doesn't apply to me. Good luck with whichever path you decide to go down JC RE: Engine Oil Pan Gasket` - fixkick - 10-29-2022 (09-21-2022, 04:36 AM)sina27 Wrote: Hello the FSM is free to read, (post 1 sticky) 1996 the pan is glued on, RTV new in the factory, and cure the pressure tested to avoid all leaks the problem what 3rd party gasket is that it stands off the CKP sensor, and 1/2 of he made do not like that at all. RE: Engine Oil Pan Gasket` - fixkick - 10-29-2022 CKP is mandated by EPA.GOV in USA> 1996 to do the OBD2 Misfires codes P030x if dead this sensor the engine runs, amazing , not on other cars, but this car. engine runs and sets DTC for it dead and can not do misfire monitors(smog) and fails smog. |
