Block Identification - Khodabear - 06-26-2013

Hello,
I have a few blocks from a bulk buy of engine parts. I don't know if they're 8 or 16 valve blocks.
Is there a way to tell from the numbers?
Are there differences between early and late 16 valve blocks?
Thanks!
Peter

just a naked block, no head, no pan, no crank ,no pistons.?
the 8v and 16v actual naked blocks are the same but not the pistons. the 16v had notched pistons, for the 4 valves per cylinder.

but if the block is really a short block ? complete, minus head , the pistons look like this.

new 8v

yes, the suzuki parts books show the parts, and all have same p/n. some early blocks 89? has and odd crank (diff. counter weights) but is not likely you will find that.
the crank is cast iron and has hollow throws. and can handle 5psi boost.
over that the rods like to bend.

with the head off.
the front top edge of the bock as a 4 digit code.
1232 means piston variance sizes. the crank has marks like that too, well hidden. for journals variances.
i mention that , in case you get the idle of swapping around pistons.
