I bring the old thermostat to several local auto wrecking shops. They have many from Toyota and Korean vehicles. I pick up three from the Korean ones that look similar with 82C. I will test them with boiling water to find which one still work!

Like I said it has only 50MM stumped on it, no other letters or numbers! Even the center point of the moon face is not really at the center!!! I only get the real rubber seal!!

If the 210f temp is OK, why do you say this engine is normal only at 180f / 82C??
(I SAID that for testing it, only, this is reverse flow cooling,  and you fail to understand what that means)

Today it even rises to 212f via the scan tool.  100% normal on a reverse flow cooling system 100% and you are doing a witch hunt , failing to under stand any of that.)

The old thermostat read either 190f or 194f on long distance drive but it throws the code P0125.  (125 has 3 causes not1)
the old was reading way too low. 212F is ECT temps not thermostat temps do you know that and why , if not I can tell you, see the cylinder head, see that, see how 180f water gets way hotter as it cools the head then lands at the ECT LAST AT THE REAR OF THE HEAD sure, it runs 212f ,and the book on your J18 tells you that clear as day if you learn to read that, under cooling, for a fact.

The engine coolant is 50/50!! I only drive the car in short distances. I am afraid to go to the traffic jam city or to go on long distance! I am afraid that the temp will rise further in hours of traffic jam leading to engine overheating!!  YOUR FEAR IS UNFOUNDED>
do not ask for  G16 helpers, they have no J18 engines. so will lie to you, UNKNOWING FACTS.

However in short distance or at idle, the car runs like champ.

It seems that the ECU is happy with this temp. It runs smoothly, quietly with easy acceleration!!
I also want to return the thermostat, however I don’t want to lose more time and money!

RE: Code for Sidekick Sport - fixkick - 09-04-2019

the other poster here (J18 sidekicks are very rare)  with 2.3L in your car.
this is OBD2 logs,  his last, see 221 to 228.  we think the radiator is too small for huge 500cc bigger engine.

you should read his posts and read is logs.  see how J18/20/23 cars run.
keep in MIND this is the hotter ECT side of the head there is no thermostat housing ECT here!!, like G16 have, this is J18. (or bigger,j20 up have this ,4cyclinders, V6 are another matter)

in the USA we'd drive the car on hot day , and run the engine up to full power, 140HP? IIRC
then log the ECT readings
if they hold steady, all is good if the ECT goes wild the CAR NEEDS REPAIR.

gain try not to fixate on exact temps, now,  learn that the ECT is not a laboratory grade instrument. did you understand what I mean?
it can be off by 10f all the time, even 20F.  the ECT readings are just from its themister device, it is not GOD, only a cheap thermistor.

what matters is CONTROL the temps need to hold steady.

on my jeep  I can drive all daY LONG AND LOG DATA ALL DAY LONG AND ECT SITS STEADY AT 200F.  (AFTER ENGINE IS FULL WARMED UP FROM COLD. )

WHAT YOURS DOES I COULD NOT GUESS. YOU ARE NOT LOGGING DATA over long distances. (a test drive) SO, THERE IS NO ANSWERS.
your mechanic should know that and what to do. ask him/her.

I go to the city this Saturday to test the car with traffic jam to see the temp. The scan tool shows live data of steady 217f, no matter how long it is!! It seems to save some MPGs. So leave it that way!

RE: Code for Sidekick Sport - fixkick - 09-08-2019

the J18 engine is very unique, with ECT no where near the thermostat,  this can make any  one used to normal cars pull hair out

end the witch hunt now, please, this is NO G16 engine, forget that,
RTM the J18 car manuals clearly tells you it runs at 212F as seen by the ECT, you have no IR gun to know how it works or how ,reverse flow works you are just clueless, ECT is rear of engine thermostat is front
thermostat sucks cold water from rad, not expels hot as G16 goes they are NOT THE SAME ENGINES AT ALL.

but if it holds at 217f all the time there is no problems.
load testing any engine can only be done this way.
on hills hot day flogged
on a DYNO
or parked for 1 full hour idling,  this really puts the stress on RAD and fan this test.

Jesus why in the world want change the design of your  car, why think that.  and is 100% normal and all this is a silly witch hunt.

Up until now it holds at 217f all the time when hot!!!

the manual on the car tells you that  is normal, so end the witch hunt or learn how reverse flow works,  or both.

Thanks you.
That is the update of the post!! This 217f is seen by the scan tool live data, it holds there even at the long hour traffic jam in the city.

again , NORMAL the manual tells you it is and it is and is now a witch hunt status, endless, it seems.

yes that is why we use a thermostat, to Regulate temps, that is its #1 job.  as you drive up a hill  or idle for hours parked the coolant will get super  hot  , way too hot  but the  thermostat measures that and opens the thermostat more until, normal temps prevail.  same on all cars , only what temps the car runs is based on what the car maker wants or to pass smog.
[/quote]

It holds 217f either running and idle at stop lights.

end this witch hot, the manual on your car told you ALL THAT IS NORMAL,
what is not normal is you thinking P0125 is here,
125 are

  1.  bad thermostat ( not yours not now)
  2. bad ECT,  use  IR gun to test it.  see if they agree.
  3.  BAD 02 reading (front) or is dead or slow or see next line.
  4. 02 read  wrong because, wrong AFR , fuel mix. and is very complex testing that you can not do lacking tools and skills.

RE: Code for Sidekick Sport - rasmeidirt - 06-15-2020

Just to add the Sport FSM supplement says the normal temp is 212f!!

YES, YES, YES, YES, YES, YES, YES, YES, YES, YES, YES, YES, YES, YES, YES, YES, YES, YES, YES, YES, YES, YES, YES, YES, YES, YES, YES, YES, YES, YES, YES, YES, YES, YES, YES, YES, YES, YES, YES, YES, YES, YES, YES, YES, YES, YES, YES, YES, YES, YES, YES, YES, YES, YES, YES, YES, YES, YES, YES, YES, YES, YES, YES, YES, YES, YES, YES, YES, YES, YES, YES, YES, YES, YES, YES, YES, YES, YES, YES, YES, YES, YES, YES, YES, YES,

You also fail to under stand parts tolerances.

no thermostat made on earth for sure by man or machine is 100% dead nuts accurate, not one,
the maker tells you this is you read there pages. do you>?

5% errors easy.
a 11f error possible.
so 217 -212f = 5 degree error, and you worry that? tell me why ?

RE: Code for Sidekick Sport - rasmeidirt - 07-21-2020

Dear Fixkick, 96' Sidekick Sport,

The code P0125 Insufficient Coolant Temperature for Closed Loop Control has returned after several months?? Now the AC even stops working when the AC button is pressed and the blue light is on but the compressor does not engage! It is too hot to drive without the ac now!

RE: Code for Sidekick Sport - fixkick - 07-21-2020

some now ECT errors mutate into dead AC.  (P0125 witch hunt ends) begin AC.(real)
not sure why me.
but if the amp pins (inputs) read wrong , that is why.
the AMP controls the AC  if the blue light is on, the AMP then using LOGIC
decides if it is safe to run the compressor, and not wreck it.

I see you fear your voltmeter so there will be no DIY here.
my AC schematic works for car.  G16, 1996 is same on J18.  both books tell you that.

fuses locations only vary.
