Transmission kickdown cable help - Soupir - 04-14-2018 95 geo tracker 1.6 16 valve fresh rebuild and upon assembly noticed kick down cable is slack. Assuming this is not correct. I can pull the cable a 1/8 of inch and it then pulls back in only that 1/8 inch but I have all this slack at the throttle plate assembly where it hooks up at. Not enough adjustment bolt to make up the difference. I am Assuming this is why the kick won't spin tires on the gravel and shifting is somewhat erratic. Any help would be appreciated. It is the lower cable in the attached picture Thanks RE: Transmission kickdown cable help - fixkick - 04-14-2018 which transmission, 3speed or 4? (usually 4speed is in 4doors, and no clue as to doors by you) sorry. kickdown,TV or detent cable or passing gear cable. (same) the cables are all 3 (throttle, cruise and kick) are set lose. the first 2 are set 10mm lose. per the book. 1/2 inch is near 10mm (25.4mm = 1 inch) the kick down cable is calibrated in a special way. (yours will fail, doing so) no, the kick down cable only changes the shift points to more latter higher RPM with , aggressive throttle actions. we have the chart here. if jammed out, transmission shifts late for ever. (we'd say it in passing gear all the time.) the cable has spring on the other end , in the transmission. the photo is key , there, super clear whats up. the cable is stuck or the other end is bad. did you carefull inspect the other end, for damage or rust. or installed wrong? the other end goes inside the box. inside the box is cam , bell crank device #20 and a spring. the cable is calibrated in a special way, knowing if its 3speed or 4speed box is the only why to get the proper way to do it. (the new cable has mark on the cable to do that) at the Throttle body end. the 3speed pulls a plunger that can rust up inside and jam. as seen here. http://www.fixkick.com/slush-pump.html#Kickdown the 4speed kickdown is here. the shift lever on the 4speed has OD button, and P/S button, and OD lamp in dash, 4SP SHIFT CONSOLE LABELS: P R N D 2 L , 4sp has an OD button and a Power button. OD overdrive and P/N (power /normal) seen here 4sp http://www.fixkick.com/tranny/slush/slide-03-72LE/html/image_9.html see the small cable on the 4speed. just behind and left of PRNDL switch shift cable. this end must not be damaged. http://www.fixkick.com/tranny/slush/slide-03-72LE/images/zuk-slush-pump4wd.jpg RE: Transmission kickdown cable help - fixkick - 04-14-2018 if the 3speed, id guess the other end 19/20 is jammed (rust) RE: Transmission kickdown cable help - fixkick - 04-14-2018 note the vacuum modulator the 4 speed has no such device, there or at all. RE: Transmission kickdown cable help - fixkick - 04-14-2018 even just the cable bad can do this. for sure if rusted inside and plastic coating on outside is cracked letting water get to the insides. (fails fast like that) RE: Transmission kickdown cable help - Nunapitchuk - 04-16-2018 Looking at your picture, it appears that you have a lot of adjustment remaining on the nut. Mine has a little metal stopper on the cable so that if I remove the cable from the throttle and pull on the end of the cable it comes out and then when I turn loose it goes back in to that stopper (because of the spring in the transmission pulling it back). When I connect it to the throttle I adjust it so there is just a tiny bit of slack in the cable (like 1/16") by using the adjusting nuts. I am wondering if your cable is moving freely, like when you take it off and pull on it you can feel the spring pressure pulling it back and when you turn loose it goes all the way back in to the stopper? RE: Transmission kickdown cable help - fixkick - 04-16-2018 4speed trans, thanks, do you need the 4speed pages, for this? its same on 92-98 sidekicks. its not intuitive at all, there is a mark to use. if you can feel the spring at the other end, id bet the cable is ok and the trans end, (Ill assume not wrong cable.) 96 free fsm or here. here is the excerpts. if stopper 2 is missing , things go wild. http://www.fixkick.com/tranny/slush/slide-03-72LE/TV-adjustment.JPG RE: Transmission kickdown cable help - Soupir - 04-22-2018 It's the 3sp transmission, how far should this cable move I can pull the end by the throttle body 1/4" and then it retracts back a 1/4" by the pull of the spring. Should I have more movement than that or is it normal. I can feel a spring pulling back on the cable but the cable only moves out a quarter inch. If that is normal I will just make adjustments in the nuts at the throttle body. Thanks RE: Transmission kickdown cable help - Soupir - 04-22-2018 So I pulled the pan and can see the plunger move when I pull the kick down cable it moves the 1/4" and back to where the end of what it's hooked to touches the back of the transmission so it must be correct? Being I have it this far was going to order a new vacuum modulator no color strip on mine what one doe I get?
