Common Failures on SideKicks:
ELECTRICAL Grounds:  ( and some power feed issues) 10 years of bad grounds (live it the Salt Belt? wiki it.)
Symptoms:.
  • Won't crank
  • Won't start
  • Runs bad.
  • ECU malfunctions , un-explainable, strange, intermittents.
  • Won't charge the battery Alternator failure , even after replacing it.
  • Misfiring, bogging, stalling.
  • Wiring in Engine bay burning , smoking or melting. (after cranking you get smoke).
  • Dim headlights , and other lamps.
  • CEL LAMP dead all the time. (good lamp)

The Suzuki's sady , uses the body metal, of the car, for the major ground common circuit paths, of critical circuits. (saves copper for sure)
All EFI , injection , spark and all things important to running, rely on the below grounds being , quite perfect, at all times.
This page helps you correct any failures, of the ground paths.

Most  items in tables below, are located in the engine bay.
All are critical for ECU and EFI systems, and Reliable and accurate operation of same.

G103 is the Starter ground lug, it goes from Battery MINUS to the TOP starter mount bolt,
G103 MUST NOT
BE PUT "ANYWHERE" ELSE.  (aka G107 starting in 1996)

G104

for all ECU shields on signal cables. critical.
G100
FENDER ground strap , behind battery!!
body main ground strap.  critical.
G103
Top of starter mount bolt main battery ground
if loose can blow up an ECU. Cranking. and burn up G100.
The above are not optional and if bad , the ECU will go dead or malfunction.  G103 must be in the correct location AND TIGHT !

All connections on this page must be clean and lubed with dielectric grease. (  i use 0-ring silicon grease or electrical silicon grease)

POWER at the right front fender block:
This fuse box , has FastonŽ quick disconnect plug connectors, on the bottom.  Make sure they are not corroded. Called Fuseable links; the fuse.
Must be unbolted to view bottom, pull battery neg. terminal first.  If this connection is bad the Alternator will fail, as will many other things.
Not  the origional factory grease on mine. below, see it?

GROUND G402  all Sidekicks below, see 2 ground lugs?
1 is Fuel Pump and other is Fuel Gauge.  IF bad fuel pump is dead.

Above: 2door only.
The Left  rear tail light housing, Lens removed. (2 bottom screws hold lens in place)
Clean both lugs , and use Dielectric Silicon grease, after it is clean . Use sand paper or steel wool to clean it.
If this fails ,the fuel pump fails, and or the fuel level gas guage or both.

Fuel pump ground 4door:

A GREAT MODIFACTION?
A nice upgrade to the system, is adding a ground (6 gage wire) from the Alternator case to the G100 point.
Especially if you live in the rust belt.

The other top failure, that is electrical, is the ECU bad main internal filter capacitors. (called Electrolytic Capacitors) CAPS for sort (AKA).
Pre 96s love to fail for bad CAPS:
The ECU is discussed here. and shows the other years and 16v ECU cap locations.

8 Valve:
Here are the circuits under C111, that can be damaged.

C111 on bottom of PCB.

The ECU can start clicking all the Solenoids and relays that are attached to it, if:
  • Fuel pump is drawing too much current (4 amps is normal).  [how to unplug Fuel pump relay]
  • Fuel pump wires grounding to the frame under car (common).
  • Any Solenoid (VSV) or ISC connected to ECU that is shorted.  Unplug all these devices, to test this theory.
  • Any wiring shorts to ECU.
  • Bad ECU Main relay.
  • or just bad Electrolytic Capacitors.
  •  Bad ECU.  (bad internal Power supply inside ECU)

There are 2 to  4 Vacuum Solenoid Valves on the motor (VSV) , EVAP, coldstart, EGR1 , EGR2.
The valves are on the front right of motor. 1.6L. or all over 16v and more on 1996+
